Common Interior Design Billing Methods
Interior designers typically use one of three billing structures:
1. Hourly Rate
Billed for all time spent on the project, including meetings, research, and drawing. This is best for smaller projects or consultations where the scope is fluid.
2. Flat Fee (Project Based)
A fixed amount for a specific scope of work (e.g., 'Master Bedroom Redesign'). This provides certainty for the client but requires the designer to manage time strictly.
3. Cost-Plus (Procurement)
The designer purchases furniture and materials at a trade discount and charges the client the retail price or the trade price plus a percentage (typically 15-35%).
Managing Procurement Invoicing
Procurement is often the most complex part of design billing. Follow these tips:
Require Pre-payment
Never order furniture or custom materials with your own money. Require 100% of the item cost plus shipping before placing the order.
Document Sourcing Fees
Be transparent about whether you are charging a sourcing fee for the time spent finding items or taking a percentage of the purchase price. Clear communication prevents disputes.
Tracking Deliveries
Use your invoice to track which items have been ordered, which are in transit, and which have been delivered to ensure the client sees the progress of their investment.
