Auto Repair Pricing Models
Auto repair shops use several billing approaches:
1. Flat Rate Labor
Use a flat-rate labor guide (Mitchell, AllData, etc.) that assigns fixed hours to each job. Charge book hours × your labor rate regardless of actual time spent. Most common in the industry.
2. Actual Time / Hourly
Bill actual hours worked at your shop rate. More fair for complicated or rusty jobs that take longer than book time.
3. Menu Pricing
Fixed prices for common services (oil change, brake job, tune-up). Customers know the cost upfront. Best for routine maintenance.
4. Diagnostic + Estimate
Charge for diagnosis time, provide written estimate, then bill actual repairs separately. Protects you from spending hours diagnosing without charge.
